Partner Work

Hallsville Elementary School

The ADD-IT project seeks to prepare teachers to use advanced technology, including handheld computers or PDAs for student assessment. To achieve this goal, we are working with two groups of teachers: in-service teachers at Mill Creek Elementary School in the Independence, MO and Hallsville Elementary School in Hallsville, MO.

At Hallsville Elementary School, many students are in eMINTS classrooms (http://www.emints.org/). These classrooms offer students high levels of technology, with teachers who receive substantial professional development and support. Inquiry-based learning and higher order thinking are emphasized, assisted by technology. Several Hallsville teachers are utilizing Foliotek, the K-5 electronic portfolio system developed for the grant by our Partner, LANIT.

Five Hallsville Elementary teachers are working on online portfolios with ADD-IT. Teachers have begun the process of setting up classroom Foliotek sites and will be involving the students in working on their own online portfolios through the KTek Foliotek student interface. As a result of being involved in the MU partnership, the teachers are incorporating use of handhelds to use evaluation tools and are using handhelds with students in collecting and developing artifacts for student portfolios.

ADD-IT is also assessing student perceptions of learning and self-assessment through interviews with selected students in grades three to five.
