Assessment Using Handhelds

Handhelds have attracted many educators because of the potential that handhelds have for teaching and learning in Education. Many educators have reported handhelds allow them to manage evaluation data in a timely manner and to assess students' performance while observing them.   • Texas School District Purchases 1,000 New palmOne Handhelds: This presents an article about Roel Gonzalez, a superintendent of a large school district in Texas, who implemented handheld computers to motivate students, help them learn, and assess them from second through fifth grades.
  • Presentation by Center for Children and Technology: A research group in the Center for Children and Technology presented at NECC conference 2004 regarding how handheld computers can support teachers' assessment and what challenges are based on the work for two projects; the reading first evaluation for the state of New Mexico and the evaluation framework for data-driven instructional decision-making, funded by NSF.
  • Cohoes Middle School: Teachers at Cohoes Middle School utilized handhelds for assessing students by creating quizzes on the handheld computers.
  • State of Maine: Handheld computers were used as real-time assessment tools for Physical Education. The GenPE which was designed by physical education teachers contains fitness and assessment software for handhelds built around rubrics and observations.
  • Handhelds Track Student Progress: Middle school students in a mathematics class working on linear equations received Palm computers installed with Imagigraph equation graphing software and infrared beaming capabilities. During the instruction, students tested their theories, collaborated and shared their works with classmates by using a Palm. They were also assessed by a teacher with help from an embedded assessment tool in the Palm.
